It didn't happen, so I can't have missed it

Hello all, my house mate was just showing me the new update thats coming for WoW, where the whole world is destroyed/maimed by this huge dragon betch, and it just got me thinking if i've been missing anything new thats happened in game, since my xbox is still busted.
Gotta say though, I'm really not a fan of WoW even though I've never really played it much (just seems a bit too cartoony for me) but that looks like a frekin epic update, I mean they're changing the whole game world so I think it's pretty impressive...

So in refereance to the title, has anything like that ever happened in FF11 before? Past vana doesn't count as that's not really changing existing game area stuff, that's just adding similar areas based on current ones.

Yes in fact!

There was this cataclysmic event where some diabolic monster of an emperess destroyed the Home Point location outside the Moghouse leading to and from Al Zahbi.

Sad day really.

Now that I think about it, that really wasn't that epic.

I kid. I don't recollect anything landscape changing.
is PUP lovin wrong?

seems like it might be a good time for SE to start thinking about things like this that have an effect on the whole game world, even if you personally aren't involved. it would be great if you could actually see stuff change over time, and maybe look back a few years down the line and tell some new friends who start playing "I remember when there was a city standing just over there" while pointing at a massive crater, or swirling vortex etc.

An update like that seems counterproductive, unless it's temporary, in which case it just seems over elaborate. I like a good deal of the content that's currently in the game and I'm not sure I'd want it changed by some cataclysm. Cool stuff may be added, but presumably some things are removed. It's very rarely good game design to remove content.

Something similar to this would be interesting...Would be extremely overcomplicated prolly, but to maybe have something small, like some new trees, dead trees, weathering of mountains/cliffs over time? Small changes, but something that old players can say "Remember when there was this clearing over here we used to camp at? It's all overgrown now!" or something...I dunno I just think it would be nifty :3

That was just an example referencng whats happening in WoW, they "rework-the-whole-game" far too often in my opinion so I wouldn't suggest something as big as that, but visible changes like what was suggested above, something as simple as certain areas becoming overgrown. maybe the outpost in they jungles should need some kind of upkeep to stop them being overgrown? Or maybe one of the massive trees in Zi' Tah should fall down and change the map for that zone, that wouldn't remove any content, just change the layout.
Obviously I don't mean to say that random things should be falling over, becoming overgrown and exploding left right and centre, changing all the zone maps, but there should be some things that we can see change over time in game other than the minimal weather effects. (more things like the rainbow every time someone completes the summoner quest)

Even something like dark Ixion that wanders through zones (though I'm not sure if he goes through them in sequence or is randomly jumping as I haven't read that info) maybe they could add another mob thats does this, I remember how everyone went nuts when they were trying to figure out how to agro him, it's the most comunity like I've ever seen FF11 outside of Ls'.

Changes that everyone can see without neccessrily causing it themself

Excuse me, have you tried getting through Jugner Forest [S]?
I'd list my merits, but I don't have room.

yes I have lol it's really annoying, but thats not what I'm talking about...well maybe it is a lttle bit of what I'm talking about, but the [S] zones don't really count. They are variations of zones that already exist yes, but it's not the same because they are always like that, they didn't change before/after the zone was made.

FFXI just did a better job. They gave us changed areas while still including the original areas.

Really, the only changes to zones I can think of are ones done via ROZ and COP. Adding the new zone entrances and so on.
I'm sure they must have changed monster levels in king rapperres tomb, cause the level cap was 50, no way they'd have level 77 mobs back then.

Th only physical zone layout changes I can ever remember SE making is the addition of new zone lines and the shattering/vanishing of crag telepoints in preparation for CoP.

I was around before CoP came out, but I don't remember any more telepoints actually being at the crags and not shattered or disappeared.... maybe it's just something I never really paid attention to seeing as how I didn't do much of CoP when it first came out...

yeah I've never heard any mention of that before... If they did do that, then that's something I guess but it's not very noticeable is it?

Well, it's certainly not noticeable for anyone who came after CoP. I mean, I vaguely remember my time before CoP came out, I couldn't have been playing for anymore than three or four months before that expansion. Anyone who showed up after would have thought the one telepoint was always shattered and the other was always just simply vanished. It makes sense in the storyline for them to break/vanish though so maybe it is something that they implemented once CoP came out.
