FFXI PbP: Chapter 2

((was actually hoping for Rosalyn to be alone at this part, but it's alright :/ shoulda said something before hand. I'll improvise))

Joseph turned away from the Red Mage in time to deflect the chi blast coming from Urthdigger. The aura sphere flew off into the air where it dissipated. Joseph turned his attention back to Aeric and knocked him aside with a blow of his weapon. He then lashed out with his hand, binding everyone in place. With everyone stuck where they stood, he reached down and grabbed Rosalyn by the collar. He dragged her limp body across the ground as he walked past her allies. He dropped her in the center of her constructed circle, then drew his great sword. With a quick spin, he destroyed the eight staves and returned the weapon to his back.

"You... fragile mortals do not understand what you are up against." Joseph said as he withdrew the Blue Soul. It shined with an otherworldly aura, a noxious blue tone that pulsed and let out waves of power. "I will add you to my collection of souls, and you will become one with my weapon, one with my will, and aid me as I bring destruction into this world."

"You ask what my real goal is? It is simply to drown this world in despair, to rid it of Altana's children, and return the world to peace. You bring war, amongst yourselves and the beastmen. Your existence is destroying the planet. And I will end it all. Starting with those of you who defy me."

A choking cough below Joseph broke the stillness. Rosalyn gripped his ankle tightly in her hand. "You're right..." she said weakly. "We are mortal and fragile. But even if we are tortured or wounded, we'll fight to survive." Joseph sneered and kicked her savagely in the gut, knocking her several feet away. Rosalyn coughed up blood as she began crawling to her hands and knees. Despite her broken and bruised body, she staggered to her feet. "You should feel the pain we feel and understand..." Rosalyn looked up, her eyes were empty and hollow. Something gleamed deep inside them, however. A glowing seal that was beginning to fade. When she spoke again, her voice was joined with one much deeper and more powerful. "I am the messenger that will deliver you to that pain and understanding."

Joseph pulled out his two long swords and rushed Rosalyn. The Mithra stood still, unwavering. As he came within steps of her, his weapons poised to strike, something invisible lashed out. In the blink of an eye, Joseph's right arm and a portion of his shoulder and upper body had been torn from him. He stumbled to the ground, a heaving mass of broken body and blue-black blood that boiled and began to turn to smoke.

Rosalyn stumbled several feet away and collapsed.
To be forgotten is worse than death.

Valkyr suddenly felt the fear-striking presence overwhelm him. He could tell too, his soul also was brought down. He fell down onto his knees, and simply stared at the force that he could see coming from the Mithra. He submissively edged back further and went lower, despite the previous binding effect that trapped him. His body was stiff and shivering and his eyes wavered. His breathing became hoarse as his mind shifted from awe and fear back to back. Then came the lashing of something - he knew not, but he certainly felt the force coming from it - which had just dismembered Joseph. Unconsciously but still shivering, the Tarutaru knelt at the amazing sight of power. His soul too, as he felt, also bowed down to it. The brief moments of consciousness brought the notion to him that Rosalyn's soul was far beyond abnormal.

"What would I do?" I asked, stalling for a bit as I tried to think of something "There's no way to tell. But no life is worth putting innocent lives in peril. Even my friend's life doesn't outweigh the lives of an entire empire."

I relaxed my grip on the knife as I thought over the options presented before me. "As for your options, you presume that those are the only options available to me. I'll accept the scroll I came for, but it's pointless to leave. In the time it'd take to return, I may as well have done nothing. Accompanying you would be as foolish as the bard's promise: You've already taken the worst case scenario, there's nothing to change by aiding you. As for the last option... I am not concerned over what you will do, kupo. I am concerned over what has already been done. What you do to the Immortals is your own business. My worry lies solely with the citizens of the empire and the mercenaries who defend them."

I grabbed my plate and hopped off the chair, stopping myself in midair "I'll proceed with my own plan in the morning. Until then I'll be in my cell, kupo."

I hurried out of the room, and as I left I began to shake. I was scared... and nervous. I was in way over my head, and it was all I could do not to break down in there. What could I do? I didn't have anything planned past the next couple seconds. All I knew was what I could not do.

Reaching my room, I shut the down and sat down with my back next to it. I'd neglected to take any utensils with me, but it was of little concern to me as I picked up the steak in my paws and tore chunks off with my teeth, finishing my meal in solitude as I sniffled, scared and sad.

OOC: This is my very first RP post, so please go gentle on me! If you have suggestions, feed back, or any other scholarly advice, Post it on the discussion page as I Will be checking it more frequently. Also, feel free to PM me!

As a full moon shines on the Empire, a new actor in this saga steps forth. A sullen and serious Hume male walks the streets of Aht Urhgan.

"it never ceases to amaze me how this "Empire" still stands..." scoffs the Hume, as he walks past carts filled with ruffled hay. "But, they do pay very well for my research budget, far more than the Federation ever did." He picks up a single fiber of hay, twirling it between his finger and thumb, breaking the strain in half. "I had better head to the Palace."

"Ahh, Artimecion, I see you've returned! And by the looks of it, you've had your hands full! A fruitful search this time perhaps?" Bowing to the hume."If you wish, I could brew you some Windurstian Tea?" thier eyes never meet.

"Do as you please..." Artimecion walks to his desk, covered in mail, letters, assignments and invitations to dinner parties and other socialite activites. "I will never understand why they gave me such a large and brutish galka as a house attendant" he sighs. "A moogle would be much more fitting..".

"Habby! HABBY! By the gods, he is stalking me the moment I get home and the second he could become even minutley usefull he cannot be found!" Artimecion pics up a bell off the cluttered desk and rings it. "HABBY!" he shouts again, with much more anger this time.

Habby comes hustling down the hallway, "Yes Artimecion?"

Artimecion gives him a confused look.."You will address me as Summoner Artimecion or Lord Belouve, do I make myself Clear? And where is this tea I've been hearing you go on and on about since I walked through the door? And Ginger cookies as well!"

Habby drops his head "Understood, I will bring hot tea and Ginger cookies. Is there anything else Lord Belouve?"

Artimecion, already forgetting the galka stands behind him, looks up breifly, "That will be all, thank you." He goes back to sortting the mail.

Aeric, standing next to Valkyr, rubs the back of his neck.

That binding spell really put a strain on Aerics body. It was rare to come across such strong magic and it reminded him of how much unrealized potential he has yet to tap. Aeric kneels down over Rosalyn, grateful that under close inspection, she was still breathing.

Aeric gives Valkyr a sidelong glance.

"You know...I was about to make my move, until Rosa intercepted." Aeric lied
"I had the whole thing under control. Joseph was as good as double dead from the effects of my 'secret-special attack'."

Aeric sighed

"Oh well... " The Red Mage continues, suddenly smiling "I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to save your life!"

Aeric casts Raise on Rosalyn.

Valkyr gave a weak smile to Aeric, but then shifted his gaze to Rosalyn and simply pushed himself backwards and sat down, placing his arms on the dirt.

In the middle of the quite night, Artimecion sits sipping his finest Windurstian tea. "Hmmm..?? A letter from Wilson.." Artimecion's eyes glaze over with a look of distant longing, memories flash through his head, and as fast as they came, they were swept back into himself.

He opens the envelope to reveal a pure white parchment..

Artimeion,
The three nations have become chaotic of late. Stories of an army from Windurst laying siege to San'doria slip past the lips of many adventurers. Do you have any information about this? Even greater a concern would be rumors of an "other worldy" man with vast powers! I did some information gathering of my own and found out a small legion of Bostokan soldiers left for Windurst, under the command of some adventurers. The times are changing rapidly. I hope the Empire finds you well. You're friends look forward to and pray for the day you return safely home. Artimecion, with Windurst in such a condition, will you really turn your back on your home?

May the Goddess bless you.

"My word..." Artimecion's expression changes rapidly as he tries to make some sense of what he has read. "I must take a trip home, it seems a fitting time." He finishes his cup of tea. A strange feeling looms over his back, as if something was nagging at him. "I think it is time for a good nights rest. I will have Habby prepare my travling pack in the morning."

He drifts soundly into sleep. The clock strikes midnight and at that same time, horrible visions of murder and chaos flood his mind. Screams of women and children echo in the halls that he is seeing himself walk through. Though he cannot see the cause of the anguish he some how knows...The hordes of Beastment. In front of him strikes a powerful and loud lighting bolt! Ramuh appears and speaks to him!

"Boy....now is not the time..." the avatar speaks loudly and clearly.

"I do not understand what this all means, what is this supposed to be?!"

"Fear...Darkness...Passion....Desperation...ye who has a scarred heart will carry the flames of rebirth to you!"

"What is that supposed to mean? Tell me Ramuh! I command you!"

"Now..is not.... the time..."
Ramuh is swept away like ash in the wind. Artimecion awakens that morning, unsure of what he has experienced.

((♪ Faded Memories - Promyvion))

When did I become such a monster...? Rosalyn asked herself as she floated along the void. Her body felt weightless, but she was drifting ever further down into a sea of blackest pitch. She recalled being beaten savagely, but everything after seemed such a blur. Whatever had happened, she knew it was bad and she had done it. Did I do this to myself?

A sudden jolt of pain seared through her, and she was no longer in the darkness but staring up at a dark ceiling in an elaborate room. A group of alchemists stood over top of her, accompanied by one Immortal. "Welcome back, adventurer," the Immortal sneered, "you died."

Her memory faded and she was once more descending into the darkness. She had no way to track how long she fell, but it felt like an eternity and a fraction of a second at once. Another sharp pain rolled through her and she found herself wounded and nursing a broken leg in the depths of a dark cave. There was no way she'd make it out. She'd die down there of hunger if the Immortals didn't find her first. Or perhaps, if whatever lurked in the shadows didn't find her first...

Rosalyn was now standing ankle deep in a pool of blue water. The eerie glow from the giant seal partitioning the room made every mark on the wall seem much more jagged, even deeper. That monster on the other side had given her the strength she needed, and she only used it to run. She didn't fight and slay the countless Immortals chasing her. And since escaping her pursuers and putting an end to the chase by facing off against the leader of the Immortals himself... she had been fighting the urge to release the wyrm.

Rosalyn took one last look around the large room. There were no engraved claw marks past the barrier, they had all been on her side. The barrier wasn't up to keep the wyrm from her. It was there to keep her from it.

"Maybe I was the monster all along..." Rosalyn said aloud. The world around her shattered, leaving her standing on a gray patch of land floating in the darkness. There were ruins up ahead in the distance visible only by the faint blue light of orbs floating in the air. "I must not be dead yet... this is... Appolyon?"

Rosalyn began her trek across the barren landscape, wondering what was happening back in Windurst.
To be forgotten is worse than death.

Re: FFXI PbP: Chapter 2

Postby Aeric on Wed Apr 29, 2009 1:13 am

Aeric took a good look around and smiled.

Windurst, fortunantly, didn't take as much structural damage as San d'Oria. Also, the streets weren't littered with the bodies of fallen comrades and civilians, as it had been in their previous battle. Hindsight was to thank for the many small advantages granted to the heroes against Joseph and his fomor army.

Aeric watched as all the warriors regrouped to gather their senses and help the civilians out from their places of hiding. He also watched as the heirarchy of Windurst stood from afar to survey the result of the battle.

Aeric was not satisfied.

Sure, they defeated their opponent but in that accomplishment they suffered a terrible revelation. Out, hidden in the very world they live in are weapons of the past. Weapons that can pose an otherworldly threat to the unsuspecting and unprepared denizens of this world.

Aeric looks to his side and spits on the ground.

Spinning around, Aeric offers a small wave over his shoulder to anyone who would catch it. The heroes would get little to no praise for their sacrifices, the world would not bow before them and before long, they would be just another group of adventuring misfits littering a bar.

Aeric pulls out his Black Link pearl:

"Everyone listen up! I'm looking for the Corsair Altrage d'Oraguille. I need you guys to search in every city and outpost. This is a new prioraty. Get the word out to every lowlife and contact we have. Let him know Aeric Bone of Bastok is coming for him."

Valkyr could care less whether anyone paid much attention to him. He stood up, slowly, and looked around for the now missing Rosalyn. The power that hung thick in the air had dissipated by now and he assumed Rosalyn was sent elsewhere by some means or the other. By what, he couldn't guess. He took several steps around the town as his ears twitched.

That burst of excitement was short lived.

You're telling me. I'm still tired...

It was a pretty strong one, kid.

Mm...I wonder if it'll be back to normal day-to-day-business from now on..

Probably...let's head back to Aht Urgahn and report...bah, we get to meet our favourite superior again.

Oh goddess...how fun.

((I'm gonna time skip a bit here, just so I'm more in line with the current flow.))

The aftermaths of the battle seemed all too anticlimactic, but in the end, it was better that the damage of the battle was minimal. The citizens of Windurst were safely escorted back, but Micro and her companions stood there rather dumbfounded - where the heck did Rosalyn disappear to?

The turn of events had sprung up more questions, and Rosalyn seemed to be the right person to ask...In the distance, she spotted and approached Valkyr and Aeric.

"Everyone listen up! I'm looking for the Corsair Altrage d'Oraguille. I need you guys to search in every city and outpost. This is a new prioraty. Get the word out to every lowlife and contact we have. Let him know Aeric Bone of Bastok is coming for him." Aeric exclaimed into his linkpearl.

Recalling the rumors she had often heard in Sand'Oria, she became curious.

"Altrage d'Oraguille? As in the Lost Son of Destin?" she gave Aeric a puzzled look.

What in the world would Aeric on about? Actually...does Aeric even know the Lost Son of Destin is nothing more than a myth?

"Aeric, sorry to burst your bubbles, but Altrage d'Oraguille's may not even a real person. As the words on the Sand'Orian streets go, it was said that his Royal Highness ordered couple of rising Dragoon Knights to become the new diplomats to the Empire of Aht Urghan...but the endeavor was considered a failure as those Knights decided to desert the Kingdom, and ultimately disgraced the King's trust. The REAL juice of the myth is that some people think this Altrage person is King's own son, but the idea of a proud King hiding his own heir seems more than just far-fetched for anyone to believe." Micro explained.

"Well...it's not often that I come to this side of Jeuno, so I might as well stick around a bit. If you want to learn more about the Lost Son of Destin, maybe you can hit up the streets of Sand'Oria...or even Aht Urghan."

She stretched her arm, and bid farewell to Aeric as she walked away without a destination nor a real purpose.

As Joseph fell, so too did the dark magic keeping me from interfering... but in the end, it just as well may have stayed. The cardians and the musketeers were more than a match for the fomor, so they never managed to breach my line. It's an odd feeling when one has been prepared for a fight... and then the fight never comes. Restlessness I guess.

I turned my attention back to the impending trial upon my return to Bastok. What I did was against the law, but it was the right thing to do. I'd probably get off on a light punishment... Karst was careful and stubborn, but he was no fool. After the accounts of this battle, he would have to accept my actions in some way, even if he may have to punish me to seem fair.

It's not like it mattered if I went into a cell though. Joseph was dead, crisis averted.

-----

I finished tending to my needs and leaned up against the door, panting to myself. The sound of the waves against the ship were almost calming... despite the nature of what it brought. Once the morning came, it'd be time for me to act the part of the adventurer, but for one last night I could pretend I was just a simple moogle with simple needs and a simple life. I got up from the door, realizing it would probably hurt if someone opened the door on me, and padded over to the far wall where I had spent the previous nights bound and laid down to rest.

Volt'aire approached the group of adventurers with his scythe resting on one shoulder, his hand hanging lazily over the shaft. "It wasn't too glorious of a win," he said with a smirk, "but I guess it's better than being suprise attacked and being on the defensive."

He looked to each of them and a quizzical look covered his face. "So... where's Rosalyn? And did we get Joseph? Or the Blue Soul?"

Volt'aire strode over to a blue-black stain on the ground, where Joseph had fallen not too long ago. "What the hell could lose this much blood and leave no body behind...?"

Valkyr just looked after Volt'aire blankly. His mind was quite empty at the moment and he felt dead tired. He could simply say, "He might've vanished like Rosalyn did too." he had no idea how Rosalyn had just vanished, but whatever happened to her might also have happened to Joseph.

Postby OMEGA_HACK on Fri May 01, 2009 8:29 pm

Dinner finished in silence. This was not the intentions of the Pirate. He would have rather had everyone laughing and sharing stories, but that was clearly not the case. He finished his steak and retreated to his room and looked out the back windows. Somewhere out there was the nation of San d'Oria, his brothers, and his father. For a moment he almost felt pity towards his father, for his inability to fess up his actions and admit his first son's identity. But was merely an ethereal thought that was soon shrouded in disgust towards that man. He had no objections towards his father as the king but as a father...he didn't even want to think of it. The sound of his door closing snapped him back into reality and he turned around to see Hobb standing in the room.

"What is it?" he asked polited.

"Tomorrow all hell will break loose," the Bard stated.

"Probably," Altrage responded.

"Can you really be okay with sending an entire city to the slaughter like the Moogle said?" Hobb asked with a look of sympathy on his face.

"There are innocent bystanders," Altrage explained, "Tell me did you every wonder why we even brought the Moogle along?" There was a bit of silence as Hobb thought over his answer.

"Well I thought it was so she couldn't go tell your plans to her master," he responded, "but since you are asking me; I know that is not the whole truth."

"You can read me well, good sir," Altrage said with a little grin on his face, "As you know I watched these two companions in the shadows as they stole the scroll and handed it off. The entire time I studied them watching and seeing how they would react and what they would do in certain situations."

"Where are you going with this?" Hobb asked.

"For a while now I have been posed as the 'bad-guy' in many eyes," he riddled, "But tell me this: How can good exist without the presence of evil? How can there be a hero without a villian? Without either none would exist, there must be evil to have good, a villian must shadow so a hero can shine. Light and Dark, this moogle has a brillance glowing about her, she shines like the good sun above Vana'diel. And I, I am her shadow, destined to ripple up the water for her to calm it."

"So you planned this all along?" Hobb asked.

"All conditions have been met, the stage is set and the actors are merely waiting in the wings. I am deemed the villian, and soon she will become the hero. But I will have already come and gone when the audience wonders what really happened to the antagonist and all attention will be on her."

"And what if she cannot uphold your expectations?"

"She will, she gets what she wants, that is the beauty of her stubbornness. Together we will weave the threads of fate and create a story for generations to hear." Hobb let out a sigh after a moment of silence. Altrage was now staring down at the floor plans of the Palace, lost in his thoughts.

"Altana, I hope you're right." the bard said and left for his room.
