Moogle's Quest: Command Prompt/Discussion

Moogle's Quest: Command Prompt/Discussion

Postby urthdigger on Fri Dec 11, 2009 12:55 am

Hello all. As I've mentioned to a few of you, I've been thinking of starting up a new PbP, done in a different style. If you've ever read MS Paint Adventures, or played old computer games with a command interface like Space Quest, King's Quest, or even purely text based games like Colossal Caves, you probably have a good idea how this works.

For those who haven't, basically I'll be in control of the game. I'm the game engine basically. You all will collectively play the role of the player, and in this thread will give any commands that you want the current character to do. Here's an example

Main Thread
Spoiler:
You step into the main foyer, only to find that the door slams shut behind you! On the table, there's a red potion, a blue potion, and a flask

Command Prompt thread
Spoiler:
One person posts "Drink the blue potion"
Another posts "Mix them in the flask"
A third posts "Invoke spells summoning elves or such"

Main Thread again
Spoiler:
Take a sip of the blue potion
You carefully take a small swallow of the blue potion. It tastes... oddly enough, like a pina colada

Invoke spell summoning elves or such
You can't think of any reason why you'd want to summon an elvaan to this place. You hate those things!

Mix the potions together
You pour both potions into the flask, which immediately starts bubbling violently. You swiftly stuff a cork in the top, acquiring one BOMB

As you can see by the demonstration, commands are taken in any order that seems interesting, even if it means holding off on a command until later. Also, similar to those old games, the character has a personality of their own, and can feel free to disagree, even though the responses are directed at You. Lastly, I'm free to interpret a command in any way I choose, usually going by "rule of funny".

If anyone's interested in participating, I'll be making the first post for it soon.

I'm interested.

It's kind of like a CYOA, isn't it? Only a lot more free and you aren't limited by a voting basis.

I dunno, are you gonna do everyone's options or choose one? Cause I'd rather just see one action carried out tbh.

Yeah, it is kinda like a CYOA as well. As for doing options, I'll pick and choose which ones actually make it in. I won't go and do ALL the options people give, but I will chain them together if it makes sense. Basically, one can think of the players as voices in the characters head. Some get followed, in a reasonable order (Ones that make the character do something). Some are ignored outright (those I don't even mention). Some are ignored, but with a reason given for why.

Part of the reason I'll do it this way is because I don't want it to go too slowly. I can't be on the forums all the time, so chances are I'll come back to a few options, and several of them are good. I don't want people to be deprived of having their option picked just because they had the bad luck of making their suggestion the same turn that someone else made a better one. I also want people to feel free to make silly suggestions and have them carried out for lulz, and simultaneously I wouldn't want people to dislike the silly suggestion because it got taken instead of one that'd advance the plot.

Another thing btw: I'm hoping that this interactive story will be a lot more friendly to people who jump in late. As was noticed in the PbP, it was kinda difficult for people to arrive later on in the story, and I've talked to a few people who've said they'd join, but can't find a way to shoehorn their character in there. Making the participants not need to make their own characters might alleviate that problem :)

Posted. I decided to use spoiler tags to split up commands, as well as put "breaks" in the action during things like scene changes, or to build tension as necessary. This whole thing is a big experiment, so let me know how you guys like it.

Hmm, what do you guys think about having any comments that wind up being read/used getting deleted, so as not to clutter the discussion thread?

See if there's anything breathing/living inside the egg.

((Talk about freaky weird...I don't mind any method of being deleted or not.))

Take the egg to the Chocobo Stable to consult about what to do with it.

-> Feel bad, go back and retrieve the egg, make Kupachi watch it (because afterall, even male seahorses carry the eggs, whatever that means...)

But Ros, you gotta remember - you can't spell Rosalyn without the "O" Egg once the egg hunt event returns!
